Preparing Security Teams for Extreme Weather Events

Security leaders are increasingly facing a new class of operational threats: extreme weather events. Excessive heat, flash floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes pose significant risks to physical security, workforce safety, and business continuity. As climate volatility accelerates, organizations must elevate their risk mitigation strategies and strengthen resilience planning across sites and critical assets.

A proactive approach begins with integrating threat intelligence and real-time environmental monitoring into your security operations centers. Early detection enables faster incident response, whether that means activating evacuation protocols, security perimeters, or coordinating with local emergency services. It is also important that access control, surveillance systems, and communication platforms remain operational during power disruptions or network outages.

Security leaders should conduct scenario-based training focused on extreme weather events. These exercises can help teams refine emergency protocols, confirm redundancies, and identify gaps in coordination. Excessive heat, for example, can affect guard performance, staffing levels, and availability.

“A weather-resilient security posture requires continuous assessment, strong collaboration between departments and communication, and a commitment to adaptive planning,” said John Campbell, CPP, Senior Vice President, Inter-Con Security®.

Organizations that invest in strong preparedness will be well-positioned in the future to protect people, property, and operations when the next weather event occurs.
