On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists with the group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes in a coordinated attack against the United States. Two planes struck the World Trade Center towers in New York City, causing their collapse and massive destruction. A third hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, while a fourth crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers attempted to regain control. Nearly 3,000 people were killed, making it one of the deadliest security failures and terrorist attacks in our history.
